Artist Statement
As a fan of unabashed 90s NYC cable access celebrities like Robin Byrd, Lou Maletta, and Al Goldstein among others, I was fascinated by people who put themselves out there so shamelessly and so publicly.
Conversations with friends who would soon appear on the covers of magazines like Honcho, Inches and Playguy opened my eyes to the idea that money wasn’t the real motivation to undress for the camera - if it was a motivation at all.
Something else was showing itself. Both from the models as well as from the people behind the scenes. They were defying the social programming around sexual taboos, having fun, and getting turned on doing it.
In this collection, the aluminum substrate brings permanence to that fleeting moment of exhilaration and play, unselfconscious and shame free. A real person with their own unique story and desires. Not just a prurient act, this is the feeling of being alive that comes from being seen. At this moment there is nowhere else these guys would rather be.
The screen offers a bright glossy image. Here, the metal is flat, less illuminated, very slightly textured, and honest. The sizes are a zoom in on the moment, tens or hundreds times larger than a tablet or phone. The image - that thrill - is in the room with us.
Let's celebrate individuals who revel in being seen and connect them to an audience who desires to see them. Like minded people encouraging each other to enjoy who they are with unapologetic enthusiasm and triumph.
